JACK MELLOR

1914 – 1994

What you are about to read is a diary from the playing days of my Dad, someone I would openly and proudly refer to as a “STAR”. As his son, you might believe me to be biased, and you would probably be right – but I’m certainly not the only person to refer to him in that way. In the pages that follow, you will see that the word is used fairly regularly, not only by me but by other people who watched him play.

This diary is based largely on the newspaper clippings that he cut out from the Huddersfield Examiner and the Halifax Courier, with a little of what I remember of him added in for good measure. Along with the 450 newspaper clippings that he left me, there are some other memories and images throw in to add to the story and (hopefully) make it more interesting.

As well as an individual title winner, he was also a team winner – as this photograph shows. The year is 1953 and these are the trophies that Jack – as I will refer to him moving forward – and his other team mates won in that year alone.

In case anyone is a bit confused, Jack was christened John but he was called Jack by everyone he knew, even his wife.
